When you SHOULD use some of these techniques: Black and white: Using black and white for shadows is fine in small amounts, but I suggest to add some color, too. Airbrush: Skilled artists can make this look good, especially if you use it in addition to hard shading. I sadly am not skilled enough to make it look decent. xD I don't suggest this tool for beginners or it might look funny like the example. Different lightness and saturation of base color: For more cartoony styles, this looks fine. I'd say it's the second best of all these. x3 Dodge and burn: If used sparingly on hair and it certain lighting, dodge can look really good. Unfortunately, it can also look really bad if overused.

There are MUCH better shading tutorials out there, and I'm not at all an expert. I honestly didn't think more than 50 people would see this. Like a few comments said, there are a lot of other factors like mood and style that I didn't cover. So if you want to learn how to shade and color right check out some other tutorials too, I suggest [link] and [link]. I feel kind of guilty, embarrassed and undeserving since this isn't a great tutorial, so I think you should look at some other ones instead. xD
These are just tips, there isn't really a "right" or "wrong" way. If you want to use one of the "don't" styles to shade, that's perfectly fine. In fact, it looks best when you combine all of the above styles a little. Note that this is meant for beginners. And it looks like some people didn't like that I said some styles were 'boring.' I just meant that they lack depth a little, there's not actually anything wrong with using black and white to shade. Some comments have pointed out that I don't have a good enough grasp on shading and coloring to make a tutorial, and I agree that I'm no expert, but hopefully I can still help those of you new to digital art. Some of you have also said that you like one of the "don't" drawings better, and that's fine, I respect your opinion. If you want to critique my tutorial go ahead and comment, I like suggestions and won't be offended.
How did this make the front page? Thank you everyone! It really means a lot to me.
This is really helpful! Thanks! I used to color by just dodging and buring, but I broke that habit and that was when I was just starting out Thanks for the tips!
at least, no beginners anyways... I'm an amateur, so maybe as I draw more I'll keep this in mind
